Investigue NFM alza de la harina

El LÍDER POLÍTICO del UNC Basdeo Panday dice que la primera tarea del comité consultivo del consejo del consumidor del precio debe ser investigar y divulgar sobre el aumento inminente del 29 por ciento en precios de la harina.

Según Sr. Panday: " En primer lugar, este comité consultivo no puede bajar precios de los alimentos. Puede incluso no tener la autoridad legal para determinar las razones completas del aumento en los precios del puerto a los estantes del supermercado. Además, en un mercado libre, que el comité consultivo no tendría ninguna posibilidad de forzar a las personas para ajustar sus precios y en el gobierno saben esto.

"Sin embargo, los molinos harineros nacionales (NFM) están a punto de subir los precios de la harina por sexta vez en 18 meses. Éste es el mismo NFM que se sentó con el ministro de los asuntos de consumidor en abril y especieros acusados y dobla a vendedores precios de los alimentos mientras que se quejaron los minoristas de que varios factores domésticos tales como congestión de tráfico, crimen, ineficacias en los puertos y el coste generalmente alto bienes y servicios debido al recalentamiento de la economía, empeoraban el impacto de internacional".

El líder de la oposición dijo que el gobierno ha rechazado constantemente aceptar su cuota de responsabilidad del aumento en el costo de los bienes y servicios y rechaza tomar medidas apropiadas para contener la situación.

"La estación de lluvias está sobre nosotros y el tiempo demostrará que la ayuda infraestructural requerida por los granjeros existentes no se ha proporcionado" dijo Panday.

"Los granjeros continuarán perdiendo sus cosechas y ganado a la ratería y a las inundaciones. Incurrirán en gran costo para conseguir colocar su producto en el mercado debido a las vías y los puentes pobres de acceso. Consecuentemente, el precio del alimento localmente producido será más alto de lo que debería".

La P.M. del norte de Couva agregó que la promesa del gobierno sobre el relevamiento de los cultivos anteriores no se materializará en el futuro próximo. Los diagramas de solamente cerca de 800 acres han sido los trabajadores distribuidos del azúcar que están haciendo frente a dificultades substanciales en la cultivación de sus diagramas. Las mega-granjas no están todavía en servicio y no producirán ningún alimento durante mucho tiempo.

POLITICAL LEADER of the United National Congress Basdeo Panday says the first task of the two-day-old Price Council and Consumer Advisory Board should be to investigate and report on the impending 29 per cent increase in flour prices.

According to Mr Panday:

"In the first place, this advisory board cannot lower food prices. It may not even have the legal authority to determine the full reasons for the increase in prices from the port to supermarket shelves. Further, in a free market, that advisory board will have no power to force anyone to adjust their prices and the government knows this.

"However, National Flour Mills (NFM) is about to raise flour prices for the sixth time in 18 months. This is the same NFM that sat down with the Minister of Consumer Affairs in April and accused grocers and doubles vendors of "jacking up" food prices while retailers complained that several domestic factors such as traffic congestion, crime, inefficiencies at the ports and the generally high cost of goods and services due to the overheating of the economy, were worsening the impact of international forces."

The Opposition Leader said government has consistently refused to accept its share of the responsibility for the increase in the cost of goods and services and it refuses to take the appropriate steps to contain the situation, engaging instead in a "blame-game".

"The rainy season is upon us and time will show that the infrastructural support required by existing farmers has not been provided," Mr Panday said.

"Farmers will continue to lose their crops and livestock to praedial larceny and flooding. They will incur great expense in getting their produce to the market because of poor access roads and bridges. As a result, the price of locally produced food will be higher than it could be."

The Couva North MP added that government's promise of relief through the cultivation of former-Caroni lands will also not materialize in the foreseeable future. Only about 800 one-acre plots have been distributed to ex-sugar workers who are facing substantial difficulties in cultivating their plots. The mega-farms are not yet up and running and will not be producing any food for a long time.
